Safety first

Elon Musk threatened to move his Tesla plant from California last month because of the state’s stay-at-home order. When I first read that Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez wrote a letter to him inviting him to relocate the plant to Hidalgo County, I was excited. I have been a fan of SpaceX and Tesla for a long time, and Elon Musk is truly a generational talent.

However, after much thought and consideration, I now find it repulsive that the judge would be willing to use worker safety, or the lack thereof, as an economic incentive to lure Tesla to the Valley.

Don’t get me wrong, Judge, Tesla would be a huge win for the Valley — but not like that. Mark 8:36: “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”

Please, Judge, don’t make our souls your economic development strategy.

Too little done to battle virus

Maybe our leaders in Washington should just forget all the blame games with China and concentrate on getting this virus under control before our country goes to hell.

China has announced that in Wuhan where this virus started infecting people it is starting the second wave of infections. Their leaders were putting in place a practice of testing all 11 million residents in one week. Let me say again: 11 people to be tested in one week!

Under our glorious leader, we have only tested a little over 20 million in five months out of 329 million people! Is this the Republicans’ way of getting rid of Medicare and Social Security? Letting the virus kill off a good portion of the elderly —will that accomplish their goal?

You may say I am cynical, but I love life and see so many people ignoring the experts’ advice about how to control this virus; it makes my hair stand up, what I have left.

Command chain exists for reason

Elia Franz complains about a Navy officer who lost his command for not following protocol (Letters, May 4).

The chain of command exists in the military so that weaknesses and problems are not aired in public, as the captain of the USS Theodore Roosevelt did. The wellness of his crew was not for any enemy or the media to discover through a leaked document, so that the possibility of an enemy capitalizing on the situation on board that ship could not be compromised. It’s not something to be politicized.

Not needed but deserved

It doesn’t seem to bother any government official that my wife and I worked, earned money and saved a little for more than a half a century when it was time to pay federal income tax.

It doesn’t seem to bother any government official that my wife and I both worked, earned money and saved a little for more than half a century when it came time to pay school taxes.

It doesn’t seem to bother any government official that my wife and I both worked, earned money and saved a little for more than half a century when it was time to pay county taxes.

It doesn’t seem to bother government officials that my wife and I both worked, earned money and saved a little when it was time to pay sales taxes.

I don’t remember any government official asking me how much I earned in order to qualify to serve my country with two years of my life in the U.S. Army.

So, why does it seem to bother our government officials when it comes to paying benefits to the victims of the COVID-19 pandemic just because they worked for more than half a century, earned money and saved a little? After all, we are just the ones providing the funds for this government to operate.

Worst case scenario: Let’s say, for the sake of argument, that we don’t need it. Does that mean we deserve it less?

Of course, our government officials never stopped receiving their salary, sometimes in the six- and seven-figures level.

Expert attacked

Its very troublesome when a national news network becomes very unreliable in its news reports. Recently some journalists openly attacked Dr. Anthony Fauci’s comments to Congress about opening the economy to soon. This man is a highly regarded medical professional and expert on contagious diseases.

Are any of the Fox journalists medical experts? Did they do any medical studies while attending any university? Or did they just simply study journalism?

Dr. Fauci was warning America that we are still in a very dangerous environment that we might not be able to control with the COVID-19 virus. We need to be very cautious with our everyday activities, because this might become America’s black plague that griped Europe in the 14th century. It killed 50 million people worldwide and 60% of the European population.
