Responses compared

Several Voice of the People articles praised the Obama administration’s response to the H1N1 virus. Here are a few facts about the Obama administration response that you may not have known.

The H1N1 virus originated in Mexico. Despite requests from Congress, the Obama administration refused to close the border between Mexico and the U.S. Trump was severely criticized for closing the border between China and the U.S. on Jan. 31.

The Obama administration declared the H1N1 virus a national emergency two months after the World Health Organization declared it a pandemic. More than 1,000 people died in the U.S. before the national emergency was declared by the Obama administration.

On March 13 Trump declared the COVID-10 virus a national emergency, two days after the World Health Organization declared it a pandemic. At that time there were no deaths in the U.S from COVID-19.

The Obama administration depleted the stock of N95 masks and never replaced them.

Given the significantly higher rate of infection of COVID-19, I personally thank God that the Trump administration and not the Obama administration is in office now.

Respect pandemic

Mr. Jake Longoria cites astronomer Carl Sagan (Letters, April 23). Mr. Sagan is a great American, erudite in the cosmos field with vast scientific knowledge.

Mr. Longoria, being panicked by a very small molecule that has killed thousands of people worldwide and here in America is no substance for satire, sarcasm and much less comedy. Please show some respect!

Religion defended

I just wanted to remind Mr. Hank Shiver (Letters, April 29) that we should all thank God that we live in a country where we have the freedom to not believe in God if we choose not to. Needless to say, God doesn’t stop existing because some people decide that they don’t believe in Him. Truth just doesn’t work that way.

Our opinions are simply opinions. Truth is absolute.

Mr. Shiver mentions several examples of injustice and outright criminal behavior. What I don’t understand is why he blames God for that.

We need to remember that Jesus Christ taught that we should “love our enemies.” He also admonished us to “turn the other cheek” when being persecuted. He said, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” This certainly doesn’t sound like some crazed, evil God.

Mr. Shiver, you can’t blame the Creator for what His creation has done. That just isn’t logical.

Christians founded the Salvation Army, YMCA, Food for the Hungry, Medical Teams International and orphanages around the world. They fought against slavery, child labor abuses and countless other causes.

What you refer to as fables, tales and legends are only such if they’re not true.

Atheism has given us communism and other ideologies that have been responsible for slaughtering millions of people worldwide.

Mr. Shivers, God will love you until you take your last breath.

Why not accept Jesus Christ as your Savior while you can?

Bank tellers are essential

I am an avid reader of The Monitor and I noticed that the newspaper has thanked everyone who is essential to our community. I noticed that you have never thanked the bank tellers; they deserve some sort of recognition since they are dealing with all kind of customers on a daily basis.

So with that being said, maybe your newspaper will recognize the bank tellers.
