Migrants aren’t huddled masses

I take offense to the presumption of ignorance you believe that Valleyites have. In the article titled “Huddled Masses” (Nov. 17), you brilliantly take two words from the poem “The New Colossus” to somehow represent the plight of the refugees crowding Matamoros as we speak.

There was only one specific reason why that poem was written.

Emma Lazarus was commissioned to write that poem to be auctioned off to raise money for the building of the enormous pedestal that would become the base for the Statue of Liberty. She wrote this poem in reference to the many Jews who were escaping czarist Russia, where they were being persecuted. It talks about the homeless, tempest-tossed, arriving at the air-bridged harbor referring to New York Harbor.

Politicians on both sides have used this sonnet to push forth their own agendas. Please do not fall into that trap by misrepresenting the poem for your readers, and especially assuming that your readership is as ignorant as your writers are.

That poem seems so important on the outset, yet it isn’t even shown on the statue itself. It is a plaque fixed upon an inner wall of the lower level of the pedestal.

I praise Emma Lazarus for her unyielding advocacy for Jewish refugees. From the late 1880s to the early 1900s more than 150,000 Jews had been killed.

There are too many differences between the Jews escaping Eastern European persecution versus the migrants coming up from Central America to make this comparison even close.

President’s hypocrisy

Here is a quick snippet of President Trump’s hypocrisy:

Trump’s daughter works at the White House. Her husband works at the White House. Rudy Giuliani’s son works at the White House.

Attorney General William Barr’s son-in-law works at the White House. Barr’s daughter works at the Treasury.

Trump’s sons do foreign business on behalf of their father, whose businesses profit off such promotions (in clear violation of the emoluments clause). His daughter is getting Chinese patents — in the midst of a trade war — and Saudi grants while they oppress or dismember their opposition.

But all Trump wants us to talk about are the Bidens.

Deep State against JFK

The Deep State had the odds stacked against President Kennedy from the get-go. The Cuban invasion was on its way, Vietnam was on its way, nuclear weapons in Cuba by Russia were on their way.

Yet he was blamed for the failed Cuban invasion that the Deep State created. He was working on ending the Vietnam war the Deep State began, he was able to reverse the plans the Russians had to install nuclear missiles in Cuba.

The Deep State wanted Kennedy out of their way. But I can tell you what the American people and the world felt about Kennedy, in that he will end the racial attitude in America and have everyone be treated equal and bring peace for America and the rest the world.

And that was his biggest challenge. So to whom was the biggest threat to go and assassinate him? It is clear as glass.
