Weslaco police have identified the victim in a shooting incident and car crash Thursday as Dr. John Jesus Dominguez.

In a news release issued Friday afternoon, the Weslaco Police Department stated that Dominguez, 59, was driving a white passenger car around noon in the vicinity of 500 S. Utah Ave. in Weslaco when he was shot. Surveillance video shows the ordeal, in which suspects in a black car blocked Dominguez’s vehicle, with what appears to be a male exiting the black car and opening fire on the victim.

Dominguez, according to police, managed to drive away only to end up in a head-on collision in the 500 block of E. U.S. Business 83, and was later pronounced dead.

“The victim was able to elude the suspects and traveled westbound on (Business) 83 from this location,” police stated in the release. “It is at this point the victim’s car swerved into oncoming traffic striking another vehicle head-on. Unfortunately, the victim succumbed to his injuries caused by the collision at the scene.”

On Thursday, Weslaco police had initially reported the case as a fatality tied to a two-vehicle crash. In Friday’s release, however, police explain that it wasn’t until later that they realized the calls that WPD fielded reporting a crash and other calls that reporting a shooting all stemmed from the same incident.

Authorities released the surveillance video Thursday night and asked the public for help identifying the suspects and the black vehicle used in the crime.
