EDINBURG — Jose Luis Garcia Jr., the 19-year-old suspect accused of orchestrating the brutal murder, burning and dismemberment of Rio Grande City teen Chayse Olivarez, was sentenced to eight years in prison Friday.

The sentence was handed down at around 5:30 p.m. by the same jury that found him not guilty of the 2017 murder at about 1:30 a.m. earlier the same day.

In addition to the sentence, Garcia, who’s accused of paying another teen $10,000 to lure Olivarez to an abandoned property in Roma to be killed, must pay a $10,000 fine. The eight-year sentence and fine are for the tampering with physical evidence charge in which Garcia was found guilty.
