UTRGV women’s golf team sets program record

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. — The UTRGV women’s golf team set a program record for the lowest single-round score with an opening round 293 at the Pat Bradley Invitational on Sunday at Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club.

The team surpassed the previous mark of 294, which was set in the first round of the 2016 Rainbow Wahine Invitational. The Vaqueros sit in eighth place with their first-round 293 and are just two shots back of Gonzaga for seventh place.

Leading the way for the Vaqueros was senior Tilda Green, who recorded a career-best four-under par 68. Green is tied for second place and is one shot off the lead that is held by Florida’s Lauren Waidner. Green’s opening round 68 is the second-lowest, single-round score in Division I program history.

Senior Vicky Gonzalez is tied for 29th place after posting a first round one-over par 73. Sophomore and Brownsville Veterans alum Julie Lucio turned in a first round two-over par 75 and sits tied for 43rd.

Freshman Sophia Tejeda is tied for 69th with a first round 77, while junior and Los Fresnos alum Briana Garza sits tied for 79th after carding a first round 79.

South Alabama holds the first-round lead after an opening round of 283.

Play will resume with the second round starting at 7 a.m. today.
