EDINBURG – Goooal!

Freshman Maya Chitman sent the ball flying, it dinged off the top of the post and found its way into the back of the net for the score.

Her teammates meet her at center field to embrace her and celebrate the point.

It was Chitman’s first-career goal, she made it look easy and it sealed the deal for the Vaqueros at home.

The Vaqueros (9-4-2, 2-2-1 WAC) had multiple scoring opportunities turned away.

Her shot on goal helped lift UTRGV Vaqueros women’s soccer team past the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners 1-0 on Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

The goal came during the 57th minute after UTRGV’s Matilyn Hepker headed the ball forward to Chitman, who turned right past defenders Dome Rodriguez and Chelsee Duran before making her moving left and sending a lob shot from outside the box over the outstretched arms of Andrea Neves (7-8-1) to make the score 1-0.

UTRGV senior goalie Kinga Szemik (8-4-2) made the goal stand by recording seven saves for her sixth shutout of the season and 16th of her career.

The ‘Runners (7-9-1, 2-4-0 WAC) outshot the Vaqueros 16-8, including 7-4 on goal.

The win comes two days after The Vaqueros women’s soccer team fell 3-0 to California Baptist University on Friday at Lancer Soccer Field in its first match of the weekend.

UTRGV is on the road for its next two matches, starting Thursday at 7 p.m. at Utah Valley.
