A man died after attempting to cross the expressway just outside of Sullivan City early Saturday morning.
According to Sullivan City Police Chief Richard Ozuna, the man was killed when he was struck by a black truck driven by a Starr County man, traveling westbound on U.S. Expressway 83.
“At approximately 6:30, early morning, we received a call in regards to an auto-pedestrian accident,” Ozuna said. “The officers responded to the location. We called for the ambulance, and unfortunately the individual that got struck by the vehicle did not make it. Our local justice of the peace, JJ Peña, came out and did the inquest.”
The man who died is believed to have been in his late 20s.
“From what I understand, as (the driver) was traveling westbound, from La Joya to Sullivan City, about a mile and a half west of FM 86 on Expressway 83 on the westbound lane, he saw a group of people run from the southbound into the northbound,” said Ozuna. “I guess as he was driving he saw them, it was dark, and then there was a straggler that came across. Being dark, he didn’t see him and he got struck. That’s where we’re at right now.”
Ozuna said that the driver called police and reported the collision. He was uninjured, and is communicating with police.
The identity of the man who died has not been released since next of kin have not been notified, but Ozuna said that police believe that he may be an undocumented person from Mexico.
“There is no crosswalks or anything like that along that expressway,” Ozuna said. “It could’ve been a group of undocumented … running across the street. That’s what we’re assuming at this time.”
The Texas Department of Public Safety and the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Sullivan City Police Department also responded to the scene of the accident.
