EDINBURG — UTRGV men’s basketball junior guard Javon Levi was named a first team All-WAC media selection, according to a news release from the conference offices Wednesday.

The media selections were based off of votes from a 20-person poll of media members who cover men’s basketball in the conference. Levi was also tabbed as a second team All-WAC pick by a poll of the league’s nine head coaches.

He averaged 9.9 points, 5.7 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 2.9 steals per game, while shooting 39.4% from the floor as a sophomore during the 2018-19 season. He was the only player nationally to average at least 5.5 assists, 2.5 steals and two turnovers or less.

Levi was one of the top defensive talents in the conference and the nation during his sophomore season. He won WAC Defensive Player of the Year honors and was also nominated for the Lefty Driesell Award, presented to the nation’s top defensive player.

His 2.95 steals per game last year ranked as the third-most nationally and most in the WAC, representing the third-best individual season for steals in conference history. Levi’s 109 steals set a new program record and nearly matched the conference’s all-time high for a single season, and placed him first in the WAC and second in the nation.

He enters his junior season ranked fifth in program history in career steals.

UTRGV was additionally picked to finish fourth out of nine teams by both the coaches’ and media WAC preseason poll after being picked to finish sixth a year ago. It’s the highest the Vaqueros have ever been picked in either preseason poll, finishing behind only New Mexico State, Grand Canyon and Seattle in both.
