The Western Athletic Conference announced Tuesday that UTRGV women’s basketball players Megan Johnson and Amara Graham have earned preseason All-Western Athletic Conference honors.
Johnson, a senior forward, was named to both the preseason All-WAC Coaches and Media second teams. She averaged 8.2 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists last season, and 9.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists during WAC action.
Graham, a redshirt junior point guard, earned a spot on the preseason All-WAC Coaches second team. She averaged 7.7 points, 3.3 assists and 2.5 rebounds in 32 starts last season, and upped her scoring in WAC play with 8.3 points per game. Graham also led UTRGV in assists on 17 occasions and scored double-figures 12 times.
UTRGV head coach Lane Lord said their experience will be leaned on this season.
“If you’re going to start your team, you’d like to have your point guard. She’ll (Amara) be a two-year starter for us as a junior now. And then I think one of the toughest competitors in the WAC is Megan Johnson. She’s our vocal-leader and we’re going to rely heavily on her,” Lord said.
UTRGV was also picked to finish fourth in both the WAC Preseason Coaches and Media polls. The Vaqueros received 40 points in the coaches poll, four behind No. 3 Missouri-Kansas City.
UTRGV is set to open the 2019-2020 season on Nov. 7 as it hosts Texas Lutheran at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
