EDINBURG — The UTRGV Department of Athletics unveiled Vaquero Village, a multi-faceted pregame fan experience introduced for basketball season, before the Vaqueros men’s basketball game against Sam Houston State on Tuesday evening at UTRGV Fieldhouse.

Vaquero Village, which is located in the courtyard outside of the arena, is subdivided into four different sections to cater to fans all of ages. One section is specially designated for current UTRGV students and another section with inflatables and yard games for kids. The other two areas are furnished with cocktail tables and lounge seating for special events and corporate sponsors.

The pregame fan experience features food, games and raffles for students and non-students alike. A bar provided by Sodexo will also serve alcoholic beverages to patrons 21 and older until the 10-minute mark of the second half.

Vaquero Village was first introduced as an idea by UTRGV Vice President and Director of Athletics Chasse Conque to showcase recent renovations to the Fieldhouse and enhance the fan experience at UTRGV basketball home games shortly after taking over his current position.

The opening of Vaquero Village was celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony that highlighted many of the upgrades to UTRGV Fieldhouse including renovated volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball locker rooms, a renovated trainer’s room, new scoreboards, baskets and a newly refurbished court.

“These renovations help to enhance both the student-athlete and fan experience,” said Conque, who was also celebrating his 100th day in the position. “We are trying to create something special here and want to show our gratitude toward all who supported these endeavors.”

Vaquero Village and doors to UTRGV Fieldhouse will open 90 minutes before the start of all basketball home games throughout the remainder of the season. On Saturday games, only the corporate sponsors and special events sections of Vaquero Village will be set up prior to game time.
