VA to host POW/MIA recognition ceremonies

The VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System, or VCB, will be hosting two POW/MIA recognition ceremonies in the Rio Grande Valley this month.

The VA will host a ceremony at 10 a.m. Sept. 18 in Harlingen at the Outpatient Clinic at 2106 Treasure Hills Blvd. An additional ceremony will be held in McAllen at 1 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Outpatient Clinic at 901 E. Hackberry Ave.

POW/MIA Recognition Day honors veterans who were prisoners of war and veterans who are listed as missing in action. It is traditionally observed on the third Friday in September each year; some federal agencies observe the week of the third Friday in September as POW/MIA Recognition Week.

This observance is one of six days throughout the year that Congress has mandated the flying of the National League of Families’ POW/MIA flag. The others are Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day.
