A 37-year-old Edinburg mother, Maria Magdalena Barrera, was arrested and charged with child abandonment or endangerment after leaving her 10-year-old son at Helping Hands Rehabilitation Center on June 12, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Initial attempts to reach Barrera were unsuccessful, the document read. Child Protective Services contacted the son’s stepfather, who said the 10-year-old should have been with Barrera, court records show.
“Contact was made later with Maria who stated she was in Mexico and hung up,” the probable cause affidavit read. An investigator “will testify through her investigation, it was found Maria abandoned (her son) at 5:00 p.m. with no intent on returning and also left him unsupervised.”
Abandonment without intent to return is a third degree felony. If convicted, Barrera faces two to 10 years and up to a $10,000 fine.
