A 37-year-old Edinburg man was arrested and charged on Aug. 1 for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Antonio Alvelo is accused of pushing his girlfriend and saying he was going to kill her after an argument, court records show.
She left for assistance from a neighbor and when she returned to the apartment, Alvelo locked the door behind her. He then “held (a) knife over her head menacingly and he was waving it back and forth,” the document reads. “Antonio told (her) that if the police entered through the door he would kill her.”
Alvelo left the apartment in the girlfriend’s Ford F-150 and was found at the 1900 block of North Sugar Road, according to police.
If convicted, Alvelo faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of not more than $10,000.
