EDINBURG — The UTRGV women’s basketball team’s schedule, which includes several rigorous road games in nonconference play, was released Tuesday by the university’s athletic department.
UTRGV will be looking to build off a promising 2018-19 season that ended in a double-overtime loss to New Mexico State in the WAC conference championship game and a trip to the Women’s Basketball Invitational. The team will play a 29-game slate before the start of the WAC conference tournament March 11-14 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
“I am really excited about our schedule,” UTRGV coach Lane Lord said. “Fifteen home games is huge for us this year. I think for the fans it will be really exciting in November because we are going to play at home a lot. Hopefully we can get off to a great start.”
UTRGV will kick off the 2019-20 season with three straight home games, starting Nov. 7 against the Texas Southern Tigers. The team will then hit the road with tough contests against the University of Texas on Nov. 20 followed by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Nov. 23 as part of the South Texas Showdown.
The squad will return for home contests against regional rivals Texas A&M-Kingsville (Nov. 26), UTSA (Nov. 30) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Dec. 12).
UTRGV will close out its nonconference schedule with a cross-country trip starting Dec. 18 against the USC Trojans in Los Angeles, followed by matchups against Nevada on Dec. 20 and Long Beach State on Dec. 21 before concluding with a game at Kansas State on Dec. 28.
The team will begin its WAC conference schedule at home against California Baptist on Jan. 4.
“I think last year taught us a lot,” Lord said. “The WAC is unique because you play all over the country and that is exciting for me and the players. The cities we get to travel to in the WAC are outstanding, but now knowing where the gyms are, what venues we are playing in, what cities we are going to, what restaurants we get to eat at, year two will hopefully be more enjoyable for us.”
The first conference road games for UTRGV will be played Jan. 9 against Kansas City before traveling north to face Chicago State on Jan. 11. The team will close out its conference schedule taking on California Baptist on the road March 7.
