In observance of June 2019 marking the fifth anniversary of the Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley’s humanitarian respite center, The Monitor has pulled from its archives 15 photos by staff photographer Delcia Lopez.

These photos illustrate local efforts to feed, clothe and shelter immigrants who have crossed the U.S.-Mexico border in search of safety and security, and oftentimes fleeing from violence and persecution. Released by U.S. Border Patrol and in the country legally, they’re here seeking asylum, but before reaching their destination, the staff of volunteers and faith-based leaders from Catholic Charities ensure they have a place to be cared for after a long, arduous journey to the U.S.

Here are their experiences in photos.
