Sharyland Pioneer completes sweep, advances to state tournament

The Sharyland Pioneer Diamondbacks are heading to the state baseball tournament after their 11-1 win in five innings over Sharyland High in Game 2 of the Region IV Class 5A Championship.

The Diamondbacks scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth to open a lead and then shut the door on their district and crosstown rivals to sweep the best-of-three series at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in Edinburg. On Thursday night, Pioneer led 7-3 going ino the bottom of the seventh but Sharyland High scored three times and had the tying run at third and winning run at second before a groundout ended the game.
