The recount for McAllen school board Place 4 is over, yielding no change as incumbent Tony Forina maintains his position as a trustee.
Challenger Gina Karam Millin requested a recount following the closely contested race for Place 4. Forina won by only 11 votes on Election Day for the McAllen school board race, according to unofficial results from Hidalgo County Elections Department. The official canvassing reports showed an additional vote in Forina’s favor.
The final results approved by a canvass on May 13 and presented to the board on Wednesday, showed Forina receiving 2,759 votes (50.11%) compared to 2,747 votes (49.89%). Forina announced his victory on social media on Friday, confirming that no changes resulted from the recount that same day. A report that shows any changes from the original canvass will be presented to the school board on Monday, according to the school district.
Forina and Karam Millin publicly debated in various platforms throughout election season, raising and spending thousands of dollars in their campaigns. Places 1, 2 and 5 were also up for election with all four incumbents ultimately maintaining their seats on the school board.
Forina said they both live in the same community and hopes to maintain amiable relations. Karam Millin is an attorney and has volunteered in organizations advocating for education. She said she wants to continue bringing awareness to the issues the district is facing.
Student enrollment, managing the budget and investing in facilities were all topics in the school board election.
