Reports: Edinburg woman among 3 charged with son’s beating death

An Edinburg woman is one of three people accused of physically abusing her 2-year-old son, eventually leading to his death, according to media reports.

The Manitowoc Herald Times Reporter reported that Rena Santiago, 27, of Edinburg, was living in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, with her 2-year-old son Gilbert Grant and two roommates, Bianca M. Bush and David R. Heiden.

According to the Times Reporter, court documents revealed that all three adults allegedly beat the child repeatedly with Santiago’s consent. The report also provides graphic details about other abuse allegations, such as Santiago force-feeding the boy then making him eat his own vomit.

According to Action 2 News, an ABC affiliate in Wisconsin, the child was found dead on April 26, his body covered in bruises and wounds. That day, according to Action 2’s report, Santiago and Bush left the apartment to run an errand, leaving Heiden to watch Gilbert.

When the boy began jumping on the bed and making noise, Heiden is accused of spanking him and eventually beating him to death, Action 2 reported. When the two women got home, the station further reported that the three allegedly began disposing of drugs and paraphernalia in the apartment.

Santiago, who is reportedly expecting another child, is charged with repeated physical abuse of a child causing death, repeated physical abuse of a child causing bodily harm, chronic neglect of a child, prostitution, possession of THC as party to a crime, and possession of drug paraphernalia as party to a crime. Both roommates received similar charges.

All three made initial court appearances on Monday at the Manitowoc County Courthouse, and each are being held on $100,000 cash bonds.
