LUBBOCK — The UTRGV baseball team split its non-conference series against Texas Tech after losing 19-11 in Game 2 on Wednesday at Dan Law Field.
After putting up five-runs during the second inning on Tuesday, UTRGV got hot again during Wednesday’s second inning as the Vaqueros had nine cross the plate for a 9-0 advantage early.
UTRGV sent 13 to the plate in the top frame and tied the team’s highest-scoring inning of the season. A two-run triple by Jacob Flores kicked things off, with Mercedes alum Oliver Closner IV driving in another run with an RBI single. Two more Vaqueros scored on a Tech error with the bases loaded. UTRGV loaded them again, setting up senior second baseman Anthony Gomez to deliver a bases-clearing triple.
The Red Raiders would storm back to score 19 straight runs before the Vaqueros answered with two during the bottom of the eighth. Texas Tech put up a seven-run fourth inning and a nine-run sixth on their way to a win and a series split.
UTRGV is now 29-15 on the year and first place in the Western Athletic Conference at 14-4.
The Vaqueros will travel to Las Cruces next for a three-game series against New Mexico State — which is tied for second in the WAC and one game behind UTRGV — at 7 p.m. Friday.
