The Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District partnered with the city of Pharr and the Mexican Consulate to provide education opportunities for adults who have immigrated from Mexico.
Representatives from all three entities hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Plaza Comunitaria on Monday, where adults will learn reading, writing and communication skills, as well as obtain information needed to find employment.
The district’s Parent Engagement Center at Graciela Garcia Elementary will act as a host for Mexico’s Secretary of Public Education Department to offer courses for adult learners, according a school district news release. The program will allow Mexican nationals to complete their elementary and secondary education from Mexico.
“We want to thank Mexico and the Mexican Consulate for their interest in investing in the lives of their citizens currently living in the U.S.,” PSJA Superintendent Dr. Daniel King said in a news release. “This program will offer incredible educational opportunities for adults in our communities.”
The Plaza Comunitaria will offer basic education toward a diploma from the Mexican education system, access to communication technology and job skills, and provide a space to cater to local needs.
“The city of Pharr is committed to supporting programs and partnerships that provide educational opportunities, resources and services for our Pharr residents and families, and we are proud to support this Plaza Comunitaria Work Program,” Pharr Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez said in a news release. “We congratulate all partners on this project that will enhance literacy and training programs in our area.”
For Maria Salvidar, a PSJA parent who will be taking classes at the Plaza Comunitaria, finishing her education will set an example for her children.
“I only finished elementary in Mexico,” the 56-year-old said. “This is an opportunity for me to show my kids that it is never too late to pursue an education. We are very grateful to the district, city and consulate for providing these opportunities.”
The Plaza Comunitaria is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 p.m. to all members of the community interested in continuing their education. For more information, call (956) 354-2028.
