Rio Grande City man suspected of shooting his cousin now in custody

The Rio Grande City man accused of shooting his cousin early Sunday morning surrendered to law enforcement Wednesday, according to the Starr County Sheriff’s Office.

Ivan Zamora, 31, is in custody at the Starr County Detention Center and has been charged with attempted murder.

At about 3 a.m. Sunday, sheriff’s deputies and Rio Grande City police responded to a shooting incident at a Whataburger, where they found 31-year-old Gonzalo Elizondo with gunshot wounds to his left arm, left hip and left thigh.

Elizondo told police Zamora shot him. Investigators at the time did not know what led to the incident.

Elizondo was transported to a hospital in McAllen but has since been released.
