Investigators searching for suspect in cousin’s shooting

Starr County Sheriff’s deputies are searching for a man accused of shooting his cousin three times early Sunday morning.

At about 3 a.m., deputies met with Rio Grande City police at a Whataburger, where they spoke with 31-year-old Gonzalo Elizondo, who had been shot in the left arm, left hip and left thigh.

Elizondo told police his cousin Ivan Zamora, 31, shot him near the Lito Garza subdivision, which is north of Expressway 83 and directly east of Rio Grande City. Investigators do not know what motive led to the shooting.

Elizondo was transported to a medical facility in McAllen and remained in critical condition Sunday, according to an agency news release.

Anyone with information about the shooting or Zamora’s whereabouts is asked to call the Starr County Sheriff’s Office at (956) 487-5571.
