The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Library in Mercedes and McAllen Public Library were announced as two of the 41 libraries across the state to receive a 2019 Texas Library Grant from the Texas Book Festival organization.
The nonprofit encourages reading in all ages and will be distributing a total of $100,500 to the selected Texas libraries. Libraries have the liberty to use the money to their volition, for more Hispanic books, better facilities or additional programs.
The Texas Book Festival announced grant recipients at the annual Texas Library Association conference in Austin at 8 a.m. on Thursday.
Since the establishment of the Texas Book Festival, over $3.1 million has been awarded to more than 800 Texas libraries. Funding of the grants funnel in from book sales and sponsorships from individuals and corporations.
The mission of Texas Book Festival is to promote literature in communities, and the organization does so by providing grants to libraries and hosting an annual Texas Book Festival Weekend at the Texas Capital. Inviting more than 275 renowned authors, the festival will take place this year on Oct. 26 and 27.
