Edinburg man accused of stealing ex’s mother’s ashes

An Edinburg man is behind bars after police allege he broke into his ex-girlfriend’s Donna mobile home and stole her mother’s ashes.

Donna police arrested Mark Meyers, 36, on Thursday, April 11, on one count of burglary of a habitation and one count of abuse of a corpse, a first-degree felony and state jail felony, respectively.

Police were called to a Hester Avenue mobile home at approximately 3:30 a.m. April 11 by a woman who said Meyers had texted her “informing her that he was inside her residence and took a picture of himself as he laid on her bed,” according to the probable cause affidavit released Wednesday by the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.

She told police that when she arrived at the home Meyers wasn’t there, and neither were her mother’s ashes, which she kept in a ceramic urn inside her bedroom.

Meyers, who Donna Police Chief Gilbert Guerrero described as the woman’s ex-boyfriend, returned to the home intoxicated while police were there and admitted to having been inside her home. The affidavit also notes he was wearing the same clothes as he was in the photo he texted the woman.

Meyers remained in county jail as of Wednesday afternoon on a $20,000 cash bond and could not be reached for comment.

The ashes have yet to be found, with the chief speculating “they’re probably down a sewer.”
