Auto-pedestrian crash claims one life in downtown McAllen

One person is dead after an auto-pedestrian crash in downtown McAllen early Saturday morning, according to McAllen police spokesperson Joel Morales.

The victim, who remains unidentified until family is notified, was crossing Bicentennial Boulevard at about 1:57 a.m. when the person was struck by a vehicle, police have reported.

According to Morales, the driver of the vehicle did not render aid and was detained later that day. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

One downtown business took to social media to voice concerns over lack of lighting and police presence in the downtown district. Suerte Bar & Grill tweeted: “@CityofMcAllen seeing how the downtown district is growing, how can we get better lighting on bicentennial and more police presence in the downtown district ?”

The case remains under investigation.
