New Mexico State (25-6, 15-1) outscored UTRGV (18-14, 10-6) 13-10 in the second overtime to win the WAC Women’s Basketball Championship on Saturday at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. The game was tied at 58 at the end of regulation and at 63 after the first overtime.
UTRGV, the tournament’s second seed, trailed by six after one quarter but outscored the conference powerhouse, and top seed, 36-25 over the next two periods to grab a 51-46 advantage going into the fourth quarter.
UTRGV lost both regular-season matchups with New Mexico State. The Aggies won at home 71-63 and held on for a 70-67 victory in Edinburg. After that loss, the Vaqueros won four of their five final games to clinch the second seed for the WAC tournament.
UTRGV then went on to defeat seventh-seeded Seattle University, 56-54, in the first round of the tournament and then downed CSU Bakersfield, the third seed, 69-58 in the semifinals to set up the match between the conference’s top two teams.
