Child struck by car, killed in Pharr following dispute

PHARR — A dispute between a group of men at a residence here ended with a child being struck by a car and killed on Friday, according to local police.

The child, whose age and identity have yet to be revealed, was hit by a car driving away from the 500 block of West Albatross Avenue following what police are calling “a disturbance” between at least two men.

Police believe the car arrived to a home on that street around 1 p.m. Friday, and one of the occupants exited the vehicle and engaged in a dispute with a man at the residence, according to a Pharr police news release. At some point, one of the car’s occupants drove off, striking the child, who was near the vehicle.

The driver then fled the scene and was later detained.

Spokesman Sgt. Michael Mendoza said the charges against the unidentified driver are pending upon further investigation. The arraignment also has yet to be scheduled.

The child was taken to a local hospital but died from injuries.

The fatal crash remains under investigation.
