NEAR LA JOYA — The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a fatal crash that occurred Wednesday morning after a driver allegedly attempted to evade a trooper and struck an oncoming vehicle.

Leonel Martinez Jr., 45, and Aurora Chavez, 69, were killed in the crash, said Lt. Johnny Hernandez, spokesman for DPS.

The San Juan residents were traveling westbound on U.S. Highway 83, west of La Joya, when the driver of a Ford Expedition traveling eastbound veered into the median and struck them head-on shortly. This occurred before 10 a.m.

That driver, who has yet to be identified, was allegedly fleeing from a DPS trooper who had tried to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle.

Following the crash, the driver fled on foot and into some brush along the highway, and has yet to be apprehended as of this posting.

The crash caused five of his passengers to be ejected from the SUV, and they were taken to a local hospital. Their condition is unknown.
