Weslaco to begin construction on new fire station

After an eight month delay, construction on the first fire station on Weslaco’s northside could begin next month.

The Weslaco City Commission approved a change order for the fire station project, decreasing the total cost by $200,254.65 and bringing its projected cost to just more than $1 million.

The new fire station will be located in Weslaco City Commission District 5, near District 4. It will replace fire station No. 1, located at 901 N. Airport Drive near the expressway.

The city plans to sell fire station No. 1.

“It’s better for the fire department, it’s better for the city because they’re going to have a newer station, and it’s going to be strategically located,” said Weslaco Mayor David Suarez.

Tri-Gen construction will start construction at the fire station the first week of April.

“Weslaco is growing to the north, so strategically it makes sense,” Suarez said. “That’s why we bought the acreage over there.”

The city also plans to utilize two $500,000 grants from the Knapp Foundation and Texas Parks and Wildlife to construct Northside Park near the new fire station.
