AUSTIN – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley baseball team came to within six outs of knocking off No. 7 Texas before falling 4-3 on Tuesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The loss snaps UTRGV’s (9-4) seven-game winning streak.
UTRGV broke a scoreless tie in the fourth. Senior Anthony Gomez drew a leadoff walk and junior Conrado Diaz followed with a single to knock out Texas (11-3) starter Matt Whelan and put runners on the corners. Kamron Fields came in and threw a wild pitch, allowing Gomez to score and Diaz to move to second. Junior Cameron Grubbs followed with a sacrifice bunt. One batter later, another wild pitch scored Diaz to put UTRGV up 2-0.
Gomez added two hits. Grubbs and freshman Jacob Flores also had hits.
In his UTRGV debut, West Virginia transfer and graduate student Connor Dotson pitched the first three innings, striking out two while allowing one hit and one walk.
Senior Jerred Quartier retired the first eight hitters he faced, but with two outs in the sixth, Eric Kennedy singled and scored on an Austin Todd double. Senior Chase Adams came in and struck out DJ Petrinsky to end the threat.
UTRGV added a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by junior Christian Sepulveda that made the score 3-1.
Senior Ben Butler (0-1) pitched a hitless seventh. In the eighth, however, Bryce Reagan had a pinch-hit single and Duke Ellis walked to knock out Butler. Kennedy singled to load the bases and Todd hit a two-run single. Then, after a double-steal. Tate Shaw hit a sacrifice fly to give Texas the lead.
Kennedy and Todd finished with two hits each.
That made a winner of Tristan Stevens (1-1), who struck out two in 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Cole Quintanilla pitched a perfect ninth for his third save.
UTRGV returns home at 7 p.m. Friday at 7 p.m. to open a three-game series against UMass.
