Rio Grande Valley Football Club unveiled new uniforms and a national sponsorship Tuesday at Pepper’s at Uptown.
“Those two things alone make a new jersey very exciting,” club president Rene Borrego said. “It’s very rare for a minor league team to get a minor league deal.”
He attributed RGV FC’s commercial appeal, at least partly, to their touted soccer-specific facility, which is one of the best in American minor league soccer.
The team’s jersey deal with Nike expired, said Borrego, and RGV FC took the opportunity to align aesthetically with their Major League Soccer affiliate, Houston Dynamo.
He noted that the new orange kits resemble the Dynamo 2017 home kit. Away jerseys will feature black tops and blue shorts, he said.
A third jersey, designed by owner Alonzo Cantu and his family, will be released in the coming months.
Fans might notice that jerseys are less intricate than previous year’s unis. Toros will have to wait until next year for a full array of custom Adidas kits made specifically for the club.
“They need months and months to do that, and this deal didn’t happen quickly enough for them to do that,” he said. “They just felt they didn’t have enough time to get a good product out.”
However, the upcoming Cantu-designed alternate jersey will be custom, and is said to be all blue.
The RGV FC home opener is on Saturday, March 16 at H-E-B Park against Fresno FC.
