UPDATE: Police arrest Edinburg man accused of ex-girlfriend’s murder

EDINBURG — Police here arrested a man on a murder charge in connection with the death of his girlfriend.

Isidro Mancilla Jr., 39, was arrested Wednesday afternoon at the Hidalgo Port of Entry, according to police. The Edinburg resident was allegedly hiding in Mexico and attempted to cross back into the country to surrender to Edinburg police.

Police found 27-year-old Samantha Marie Cantu dead from a stab wound to the chest Tuesday after they were called to the 3000 block of East Efrain Street around 11 p.m. in reference to a suspicious circumstance.

It is unknown how long Cantu is believed to have been dead; she was unresponsive when police arrived.

Mancilla has an extensive criminal record dating back to 1997, according to Hidalgo County court records. He has been convicted of misdemeanor criminal mischief, burglary and assault, and most recently in 2011, pleaded guilty to five counts of second-degree felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and was sentenced to five years in state jail.

He will be arraigned Thursday at Edinburg Municipal Court on the first-degree felony charge.
