Weslaco police charge man with infant’s murder

Police in Weslaco have arrested and charged a local man with capital murder for the death of his 3-month-old boy, according to an agency news release.

Diego Rangel Martinez, 24, was arrested Saturday and issued a $500,000 bond in connection with the crime. The arrest came after a San Antonio hospital notified police of the child’s death at approximately 6 p.m. Friday.

According to the release, Weslaco police responded at about 2:15 p.m. Wednesday to Knapp Medical Center in reference to an unresponsive 3-month-old child.

“Apparently they were able to hitch a ride with one of the neighbors to take him to the hospital,” Eric Hernandez, spokesman for the Weslaco Police Department, said Monday when asked for the circumstances surrounding the boy’s hospitalization at Knapp.

Hernandez said the mother was with the child at the hospital but did not know whether Martinez was present. The officer did not describe the type of injuries the boy sustained.

The child’s injuries “were sufficient enough to have him airlifted to a hospital in San Antonio,” the release read.

Weslaco police found Martinez “responsible for the child’s injuries” after “a thorough investigation,” and have ordered an autopsy be performed, the results of which are not yet available.
