EDINBURG —UTRGV beat Houston Baptist University (HBU) 6-0 on Tuesday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.

Senior Jerred Quartier started for UTRGV (2-2) and didn’t allow a hit until the fourth. He finished with three strikeouts in four innings.

Freshman Colten Davis (1-0) struck out one in his first-career inning of work.

Senior McAllen Memorial alum Juan Carreon II followed by retiring nine of the 10 batters he faced.

Sophomore Max Balderrama Jr. finished with a clean ninth.

UTRGV hit around against HBU (2-2) starter Daniel Endsley (0-1) in the first, scoring on singles by juniors Christian Sepulveda and Nick Contreras. Then, with the bases loaded and two outs, freshman Vela alum Aaron Galvan was hit by a pitch to force in a run.

UTRGV scored two runs in the third on RBI-doubles by freshman Jacob Flores and junior Andy Atwood.

UTRGV added one more run in the eighth on a Galvan single.

Four UTRGV hitters had two hits, including Flores, Atwood, Galvan and junior Conrado Diaz, who also drew a walk.

UTRGV opens the Al Ogletree Classic at 7 p.m. Friday against Portland at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. Portland faces North Dakota State at 3 p.m. Gates open at 2 p.m.


Schmit, Loyd named WAC doubles team of the week

EDINBURG — The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley men’s tennis team learned on Tuesday that the doubles team of junior Mateo Schmit and sophomore Michael Loyd have been named Western Athletic Conference Men’s Double Team of the Week.

The duo went 2-0 over the weekend after defeating Lamar’s Brock Lauer and Arthur Serafim 6-4, which was the only doubles point for UTRGV.

Schmit and Loyd followed with another 6-4 win over Southern Miss’ Tom Cecchetto and Matthieu Peres, which helped clinch the doubles point for UTRGV.

The pair of wins was the first two wins for the duo this season.

UTRGV will be back in action this weekend when it competes in the H-E-B Tournament of Champions in Corpus Christi starting Friday.


UTRGV’s Spinler named track & field athlete of week

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women’s indoor track & field team learned on Tuesday that junior Sierra Spinler is the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Athlete of the Week for her efforts at the Aggie Twilight on Saturday.

Spinler recorded the fourth-fastest mile run in program history with a time of 5:05.86, the best in the WAC this season, to finish fifth out of 17.


UTRGV mens golf wins LaTour Intercollegiate

MATHEWS, La. —  UTRGV men’s golf team held on to its first-day lead to win the LaTour Intercollegiate by 16 shots on Tuesday at LaTour Golf Club.

UTRGV posted a three-round score of 869 as Samford finished in second place with a three-round score of 885 and Stephen F. Austin finished in third with a score of 886. UTRGV posted a final round team score of 288 as it was just one of two teams to post a score below 300 on the final day.

It’s the second straight tournament victory for UTRGV after closing out the fall semester with a win at the Brooks Invitational and the fourth win for UTRGV since the spring of 2018.

Sophomore Tennoshin Ogawa was crowned co-champion after finishing tied with Incarnate Word’s John Hill. Ogawa posted a final round even-par 72 to finish with a three-round score of 213. Ogawa was one shot off the lead heading into his final two holes as he birdied the par-3 17th and closed out his round with a par on the par-5 18th.

Ogawa is the fourth to take home an individual tournament championship since the start of the spring semester in 2018 as Alvaro Hernandez on the Atchafalaya Intercollegiate, Ali Khazanbeik won the Big Texan Invitational, and Tae Itthiratchai won the Brooks Invitational.

UTRGV will be in search of its third straight win when it tees it up at the Colin Montgomerie Intercollegiate starting Feb. 25.
