Road work in Peñitas expected to cause delays

The city of Peñitas is warning the public that traffic delays are expected next week due to road work.

Beginning on Monday, the Texas Department of Transportation will be working on an overlay project on U.S. 83. Eastbound traffic will be reduced to one lane from FM 2221 (Jara Chinas Road) to Showers Road, according to a news release issued by the city on Friday.

“We want our citizens to plan ahead and make sure they give themselves enough time in the mornings and evenings as they travel through the affected areas,” City Manager Omar Romero stated in the release, “especially given the fact that FM 2221 to Showers Road will be reduced to one lane.”

The expected delays come just as schools will be back in session following the holiday break, bringing additional traffic of students, teachers and other faculty.

“We ask all drivers traveling through this area to exercise caution, obey traffic signs, and plan ahead to allow for additional time as they travel to their destination,” Mayor Rigo Lopez stated in the release.
