UC Irvine dropkicks UTRGV in final nonconference tune-up

The UTRGV men’s basketball team fell to UC Irvine 85-74 on Thursday at the Bren Events Center in Irvine, Calif.

Graduate student Tyson Smith led UTRGV (8-8) with a career-high tying 16 points, a season-high five rebounds, three assists and a career-high tying three steals. Sophomore Greg Bowie II scored 13 points with four rebounds. Graduate student Solomon Hainna scored nine points with a season-high tying five rebounds, a career-high tying two assists and a career-high tying three steals. Senior Terry Winn III finished with nine points and four rebounds.

UC Irvine made 11 of 19 3-point attempts on Thursday night and led by as many as 28 points in the second half. UTRGV will open WAC play Saturday at California Baptist. Tipoff is set for 9 p.m.
