Rio Grande Valley hospitals celebrated the births of the first babies of 2019 on New Year’s Day Tuesday.

Alec was born on 12:32 a.m. to Dinora Sanchez at DHR Health Women’s Hospital. He weighed 6 pounds, 5.5 ounces.

“It is really a privilege to be a part of such milestones in the lives of families in our community — and it is extra special when it’s a New Year’s baby,” said Aida Gonzalez, Vice President of DHR Health Women’s Hospital.

Rio Grande Regional Hospital’s first baby of the year was Dahyre, who weighed 6 pounds, 9 ounces.

“I was excited to go into labor on New Year’s Eve,” said mother Estefania Maldonado. “I was a little disappointed I was not going to be able to enjoy all the good food around me, but I was ready to meet my baby girl.  Now, we will always have an extra reason to celebrate a new year.”

Miguel was born on 9:19 a.m. to Carla and Carlos Cardenas at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville. He weighed 6 pounds, 10 ounces.
