Rio Grande Valley hospitals celebrated the births of the first babies of 2019 on New Year’s Day Tuesday.
Oneida Perez and Raul Garza welcomed the first Valley baby of the new year — Maverick Jett born on 12:18 a.m. at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen. He weighed 7 pounds, 13.2 ounces.
Alec was born on 12:32 a.m. to Dinora Sanchez at DHR Health Women’s Hospital. He weighed 6 pounds, 5.5 ounces.
“It is really a privilege to be a part of such milestones in the lives of families in our community — and it is extra special when it’s a New Year’s baby,” said Aida Gonzalez, Vice President of DHR Health Women’s Hospital.
Rio Grande Regional Hospital’s first baby of the year was Dahyre, who weighed 6 pounds, 9 ounces.
“I was excited to go into labor on New Year’s Eve,” said mother Estefania Maldonado. “I was a little disappointed I was not going to be able to enjoy all the good food around me, but I was ready to meet my baby girl. Now, we will always have an extra reason to celebrate a new year.”
Miguel was born on 9:19 a.m. to Carla and Carlos Cardenas at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville. He weighed 6 pounds, 10 ounces.

Lavender Sol was born 12:21 p.m. to Elisa Marie De Hoyos and Daniel Rodriguez at Holy Family Birth Center in Weslaco.
Miguel Angel Lopez was born at 2:16 p.m. to Josie Torres at McAllen Medical Center. He weighed in at 8 pounds, 6 ounces.
