A couple were robbed outside a grocery store in Rio Grande City on Friday as they were on their way to an 8-liner game room, according to the Starr County Sheriff’s Office.
They were robbed of approximately $600 by a woman wearing a rag on her face, black gloves and a hoodie who approached them in the parking lot of Hillside Grocery Store, located on 6924 E. Highway 83 in Rio Grande City, according to a news release.
The couple were headed to an 8-liner establishment located at the back of the grocery store, according to Major Carlos Delgado, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office.
The woman drove away in a dark colored Chevrolet Cruze, which the victims later found and then proceeded to contact law enforcement.
Two women, Daniela Aranda, 31, and Abigail Cantu, 23 — both of Alto Bonito — were arrested and charged with aggravated robbery. Cantu was additionally charged with escape while arrested/confined after authorities say she managed to slip out of her handcuffs and ran outside the sheriff’s office. She was immediately taken into custody.
A black plastic toy gun and black gloves were recovered from the vehicle while approximately $495 was recovered from Cantu after she was searched at the Starr County Detention Center.
