Woman, young boy killed in Donna wreck

First responders and investigators work the scene of a fatal crash in Donna on Wednesday, Dec. 19.

DONNA — A woman and child are dead and two children in the hospital following a head-on collision here Wednesday morning.

The woman crashed her Pontiac G6 into a Honda Odyssey passenger van on Farm-to-Market Road 493 (Salinas Boulevard), just north of Military Road, around 10 a.m., according to Lt. Johnny Hernandez, spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The preliminary investigation suggests she veered off the road and struck the van head-on when she attempted to overcorrect, traveling into oncoming traffic.

She and an 8-year-old boy in her vehicle were killed, said Hernandez, and her other two passengers — both young boys — remain hospitalized. The driver of the van was also hospitalized.

DPS, which is assisting Donna police with the investigation, is not releasing any of the identities at this time.

Donna Police Chief Gilbert Guerrero said the woman was driving her kids to school at the time of the crash.

“This is a dangerous road, even if you’re driving safe,” Guerrero said of FM 493, which has been under construction for more than a year. The road lacks streetlights and there is no shoulder, Guerrero said, adding the road drops about 2 feet on its side.

“With the recent (traffic) fatalities, it will take both law enforcement and the public to reduce them,” said Hernandez. “We all need to be more responsible.”

DPS reminds drivers to put down their cellphone while behind the wheel, watch their speed and not drink and drive.

Wednesday’s crash remains under investigation.
