UPDATE: False bomb threat cleared in Alamo

UPDATE 6:40 p.m.

ALAMO — The eastbound lanes of the Expressway 281 frontage road between Cesar Chavez Road and North Alamo Road have been reopened after police shut them down for a few hours during a bomb threat investigation.

Alamo police, in conjunction with the McAllen Police Department bomb squad, responded to a bomb threat at a State Farm Insurance office in the 1300 block of W. Frontage Road shortly before noon Thursday. No bomb was recovered.

The threat was made to the insurance company via email, said Alamo Police Chief Baudelio Castillo.

It was one of many nationwide made by email or phone Thursday against businesses, schools and hospitals, all of which appear to be hoaxes. Many of the threats demanded thousands of dollars in Bitcoin, according to national media reports, but Castillo said no such demand was made locally.

As a precaution, Alamo police temporarily evacuated the surrounding businesses, including the neighboring Walmart Supercenter.
