The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office has identified the body wrapped in a blanket along the side of a rural Donna road as that of a Salvadoran migrant, whose family told authorities he had fallen ill during his journey to the United States.
The body of Cristian Chavez-Reyes, 39, was discovered Tuesday on Dillon Road between East Curve and East Curry Roads at approximately 8:30 a.m. after deputies received a call from a concerned citizen.
The preliminary investigation indicates no signs of foul play, and investigators are awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine cause of death, which at this time is being treated as equivocal — uncertain or questionable due to the circumstances.
Chavez-Reyes is believed to have crossed into the United States sometime between Sept. 20 and Sept. 23, according to spokeswoman Sr. Deputy Jena Palacios-Pacheco.
As the investigation into his death is ongoing, anyone with information is asked to contact HCSO’s Criminal Investigations Division at (956) 383-8114 or its anonymous Hidalgo County Crime Stoppers hotline at (956) 668-8477.
