A short-term residential clean-up assistance program is now available for eligible seniors in Weslaco whose homes were damaged by recent flooding, offered by the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council’s Area Agency on Aging.
The program, which began Friday, was started to maintain “the health, safety and independence to vulnerable seniors in the community.”
Eligibility requirements include being 60 years of age or older and living alone with “limited supports,” according to a press release from the agency.
An agency representative will coordinate the home clean-up services to help remove debris destroyed in the flood, including furniture, appliances, carpet and sheetrock.
The organization is working with cities impacted by the floods and the Hidalgo County Community Service Agency to identify eligible seniors.
Flooded homes can pose various health and safety risks to anyone, such as illness, injury and respiratory or digestive problems. Seniors are especially susceptible.
To learn more and apply for the program, contact the agency’s office at (956) 682-3481.
The agency is a division of the LRGVDC aimed at providing services to seniors in the community, including case management and resource referrals.
