Valley Interfaith to press for DACA fix

Valley Interfaith leaders will meet Tuesday in Brownsville to call on Congress and the Senate to support Dreamers by passing a permanent DACA bill.

The group will hold a news conference at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where it will outline the action it wants Congress to take. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals deadline is March 5.

“The Bible is clear. We are to welcome the immigrant, as we were once immigrants in a foreign land. We now call on our elected officials to welcome the Dreamers and create a path to citizenship for these youths that were brought to this country when they were young. Today, we remind our leaders of their moral responsibility to enact reforms that protect youth and families,” stated Msgr. Heberto Diaz, pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brownsville.

Leaders and pastors have collected signed petition cards from their parishioners that they plan to mail to elected officials after Tuesday’s news conference.
