Regional Ramblings: February Tejano, conjunto events in the RGV


A round-up of some of the most anticipated Tejano, conjunto and cultural events for the month of February:

>> South Texas conjunto legend Pepe Maldonado has lined up the month of February with another quality list of top conjunto acts from the Rio Grande Valley and beyond. Thanks to Joe Maldonado for reaching out and always letting me know the upcoming schedule. These are the following acts scheduled for the second month of the year: Pepe Maldonado y su conjunto and Hector Gonzalez and the X2Gs (Feb. 4), Los Fantasmas del Valle (Feb. 11), The Hometown Boys (Feb. 18), and Ruben de la Cruz y su conjunto and Gilberto Perez y Sus Compardes (Feb. 25). >> The Narciso Martinez Cultural Arts Center (NMCAC) will be hosting Frutty Villarreal at La Villa Dance Hall in San Benito on Feb. 15 for their monthly “3rd Thursday of the Month Conjunto Nights.” Villarreal is one of the best conjunto accordionist of this area, and has made appearances at both the Tejano Conjunto Festival in San Antonio and the local NMCAC Conjunto Festival in San Benito. >> On Feb. 3, the Outta Town Dance Hall is hosting Jimmy Gonzalez y Grupo Mazz, along with Maricela y Tiempo. Special guests also include Ricardo Cortez, Ricardo Rodriguez, JJ Peña, and Patty Ocaña. >> Intocable and La Mafia will be headlining the Fiesta Edinburg’s 50th Anniversary celebration on Feb. 23 and 24. Intocable is set to perform on the first date, while La Mafia will headline on the second date. Presale two-day concert pass is $25. More information can be found at
