The RGV FC Toros closed out their year with a 3-1 loss to San Antonio FC on Saturday at Toyota Field in San Antonio.
RGV FC finishes the franchise’s second season 9-15-8. The Toros’ 35 points in the standings is 11 shy of what would have been required to secure a playoff spot in the Western Conference.
San Antonio ends the regular season 17-4-11, good for 62 points and the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference.
SAFC only narrowly won the statistical battle on Saturday, holding 52.7 percent of possession and outshooting RGV FC 15-13 overall and 6-4 on target. Still, San Antonio seemed to create substantially more dangerous chances throughout the match.
SAFC scored first in the 29th minute. As a long San Antonio pass bounced toward the left edge of RGV’s penalty box, Toros defender Kevin Garcia attempted to head the ball to keeper Calle Brown. Garcia’s pass inadvertently bounced close to the byline, forcing Brown to dive to try to corral the ball and prevent a corner kick. Brown managed to keep the ball in play, but San Antonio’s Billy Forbes was the only player in position to recover it, dribbling into the net nearly uncontested.
San Antonio’s lead stretched to 2-0 only about 5 minutes later. SAFC played a rolling through ball to Owayne Omar Gordon down the right wing, and his first touch was a low centering pass. Ever Guzman connected with a sliding shot from about the penalty spot, sending the ball into the left side of the net.
The Toros got on the board in the 47th minute. Jose Escalante attacked from the left side and unleashed a centering pass that bounced off a couple different players before falling to Eric Bird at the top of the penalty box. Bird sent a low, left-footed volley into the center of the net to pull RGV FC within 2-1.
San Antonio cushioned its lead in the 59th minute. Forbes dribbled down the left wing and played a centering pass to Guzman, who was all alone only about 6 yards from goal. He touched the ball into the empty net to secure a brace.
RGV FC’s effort to get back into the match was dealt a critical blow in the 73rd minute, when Escalante was sent off with a red card for kicking Gordon in the back as he juggled the ball near the sideline.
