A murder suspect wanted in connection for his role in the February 2017 death of two Donna residents has died in Mexico, the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.
Suspect Isai Varela, 27, was believed to have fled to Rio Bravo, Mexico, and on Oct. 3, sheriff’s investigators learned he was killed during a shootout with the Mexican military.
Investigators confirmed Varela’s identity though fingerprints recovered by the Federal Bureau of Investigations and Mexican authorities.
On Feb. 9, sheriff’s deputies responded to an apartment complex in rural Donna after receiving a call of shots fired. They found Felishia Solis, 26, outside the complex, dead from gunshot wounds. Jose Alfredo Zuniga, 30, who was found inside, died at a local hospital from gunshot wounds.
Varela was the only suspect named in the double-homicide investigation.
