The Government Finance Officers Association recognized the City of Weslaco for its financial reporting practices.
The association awarded the city with a certificate of achievement for excellence in financial reporting.
The city previously received the award in 1987.
The achievement is the “highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting,” according to the association.
The city received the award for fiscal year 2015.
“Mary Barrera and her finance team did a great job in putting the CAFR (comprehensive annual financial report) together along with our auditors,” City Manager Mike Perez said.
Barrera, the city’s finance director who was hired by Perez, has been with the city for about two-and-a-half years. Carr Riggs & Ingram conducted the city’s audit.
“The CAFR has been judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program, which includes demonstrating a constructive ‘spirit of full disclosure’ to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the CAFR,” according to a news release by the association.
The award encourages local governments to further their annual financial reports by allowing for full disclosure, according to the association.
“For us, it’s a big accomplishment,” Perez said.
With the fiscal year ending on Friday, the city will soon conduct an audit for 2016.
