Cowboys WR Roy Williams to make Valley appearance Friday
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Roy Williams' 10 games as a Dallas Cowboys player last season were as forgettable as it gets for a wide receiver expected to produce top-notch numbers. That he played for America's Team only made it worse.
"I'm not used to anything like that," Williams said about his lack of production. "It kind of got to me."
Williams will participate in the Sharyland Rattlers Golf Tournament on Friday at Palm View Golf Course in McAllen to help raise money for the Sharyland High School football and girls basketball teams.
Goodwill aside, Williams caught only 19 passes for 198 yards and one touchdown after joining Dallas via an October trade with Detroit. He was expected to help bolster the Cowboys offense but instead wilted on a team loaded with stars.
Tight end Jason Witten became quarterback Tony Romo's top target and Terrell Owens, who has since signed with Buffalo, was the team's top receiver.
Williams said he has worked out with Romo recently to build a comfort level that was not there last season.
"We have to get that timing down that we couldn't get because he was hurt for four games and then when he got back I had foot problems," Williams said. "Hopefully this year we are both healthy and we could do what he and T.O. did."
Williams admitted as much as he tried to ignore the media, it was hard not to pay attention to the chatter.
"You listen to the greats like Troy Aikman and Deion Sanders, and they hating on me," Williams said. "It's all good. I respect those guys because they played the game. I don't agree with what they say but I listen to those guys because they know what is going on."
All Williams said he can do is focus on his game and make believers out of Cowboys fans that he is the real deal. Others might believe he is not a No.1 receiver, but not Williams.
"This is my year to go out there and show what I can do," Williams said. "I can't talk about it. I just have to let my game show."
Williams will be one of 10 Cowboys players expected to participate in the tournament that is not open to the public. Others expected to play are DeMarcus Ware and Patrick Crayton.
C.J. Cavazos, who has brought Cowboys players to the Rio Grande Valley for meet and greets through his operation Cowboy Connection, said there is still time to participate in the event.
"We are going to help our summer travel programs, which are the football team with the seven-on-seven tournaments and the girls basketball team," Cavazos said. "We want to help them travel and be able to do more stuff for the football program that they don't have it in their budget to do."
The cost to participate in the tournament starts at $800. Anyone interested in participating can e-mail Cavazos at cjcavazos@yahoo.com.
