EDINBURG — UTPA hired South Carolina State coach Glad Bugariu as the first Broncs women’s soccer coach Friday.
The Broncs are set to begin the inaugural season of women’s soccer at UTPA as a member of the Western Athletic Conference in 2014.
“I want to thank Chris King and [UTPA] President [Dr. Robert S.] Nelsen for this opportunity and I am grateful for their confidence that I am the right fit to lead UTPA to Western Athletic Conference glory,” Bugariu said. “I am very impressed with the leadership and direction of this athletic department and I am well aware of the potential this university and community has for success. This is a perfect fit. I know that UTPA is a gold mine and ready for success. I am well prepared and confident that I can construct a successful program quickly.”
The winningest head coach in SCSU history, Bugariu made an immediate impact on the SCSU program, transforming it into a Great West Conference (GWC) Eastern Division Regular Season Champion in only three seasons and recording more wins during that period then the program had attained in the previous nine seasons.
The 2010 season was the most successful in program history. Ranked 19th in the NCAA in scoring, the Bulldogs finished 13-6-1 and undefeated in the GWC East Division at 6-0. Six Bulldogs earned All-Conference honors, Briana Lopez, who is currently in full-time residency with the Mexican National Team, was named Freshman of the Year, and Bugariu was named Co-Coach of the Year.
In total, 16 Bulldogs earned All-Conference honors in five years under Bugariu’s direction, including
